Street Photography & Numeracy

A Pedagogical Project with Elementary School Students

Street Photography and Me is a pedagogical project consisting of seven workshops that I developed for Une école montréalaise pour tous (UEMTP), a program from Québec’s Ministry of Education that brings art and cultural experiences into elementary schools in Montreal’s underserved areas.

This project invites students ages 8 to 12 to explore street photography as a creative and educational tool to better understand themselves and the world they live in. Using their iPads, students learn the fundamentals of photography—including how to observe their environment more attentively, compose images, edit their photos, and critique both their own work and that of others.

Alongside their artistic development, students strengthen their numeracy skills by creating and solving mathematical problems inspired by their photographs, making math more relevant and connected to real life.

Moreover, students build the vocabulary and confidence needed to discuss art and culture thoughtfully, through observation, critical thinking, and visual storytelling.

The project culminates in a student-led exhibit showcasing their photographic and mathematical work—celebrating their unique expression—and concludes with a visit to a professional photography exhibition in the community, helping them connect their learning to the wider cultural world.

The following slide show is the French version of the photography basics introduction of the project.
