Post Velum - Seeing Through

What began as a meditation on time has evolved into time becoming my teacher, and showing me the change that has occurred within myself over time.

Throughout this project, I faced many challenges—from the technical preparation of my substrates, to the photographs needed to create a cohesive visual language, to the deeper meaning behind the work itself.

As I contemplate the final results of my experimentations, what have I learned?

Glass and mirrors are challenging substrates to work with, as they are non-porous, reflective and transparent surfaces.

One must develop technical proficiency before being able to create meaningful work.

Giving myself mental space and physical time, affords me more patience.

My personality is not suited to meticulous and refined work.

Experimentation as an objective allows me the freedom to fail.

The moment I am about to realize if my experimentation worked, creates within me a rush of adrenalin and a surge of excitement.

That fear, desire, exhilaration, dread and joy can coexist in a single moment.

Self-portraiture feels awkward and unnatural to me.

Glass and mirrors as printing surfaces do not align with my aesthetic nor felt sense, yet somehow relate to my artist’s name, Post Velum—in pursuit of what lies behind the veil.

What now is the significance of this work? The combination of glass and mirror as printing surfaces? The long exposure self-portraits juxtaposed against the empty spaces and nature scenes? The sequencing of the images and how they are presented?

It would be hypocritical of me if I said I knew what it all meant at this point in time.

And sometimes, it takes more than 12 weeks to understand, where you have arrived, from where you have been.
