The Paradox of Decay

Seeing and sensing the beauty and the mystery in the weathering, decomposition and transformation of organic and inorganic materials over time.

How do patterns and textures of decay imprint on the hard surfaces of our city, marking the passage of time?

How do cycles of transformation and renewal shape our material world?

How do cracks, rust and erosion underscore the existence and passing of something or someone?

How does materiality affect the temporality of the rhythm of nature?

How do human beings manage the impermanence and cyclical nature of the natural world?

Traces - a mark, object, or other indication of the existence or passing of something.

Materiality - the quality of being relevant or significant.

Transformation - a change in form or appearance.

Immutable - unchanging over time or unable to be changed.

Temporality - the state of existing within, or having some relationship with time.

Impermanence - the state of lasting for a limited period of time.

Time - the indefinite continued progress of the existence and events in the past, present, and future - regarded as a whole.

Texture - the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or substance.

Weathering - the process of wearing or being worn by long exposure to the atmosphere.

Decay - the state or process of rotting or decomposition.

Decomposition -the process by which organic substances are broken down into simpler organic/inorganic matter.

Paradox - a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.

Through my photographs I investigate how seemingly immutable surfaces become fascinating canvases juxtaposing the passage of humanity and the patterns of nature over time.
